People leave Airtable for three reasons, and each points somewhere completely different.<\/p>\n
Some hit the record limits, which arrive faster than anyone expects once you start logging events rather than storing entities. Some found the pricing moved away from small teams as Airtable shifted upmarket. And some want to own their data, either self-hosted or in a database they control.<\/p>\n
Work out which is yours first, because the answer for “too expensive” is not the answer for “too limited.”<\/p>\n
Worth being precise, because several alternatives are weaker in ways that only surface later.<\/p>\n
Airtable’s value is linked records<\/strong> \u2014 a cell holding a live, bidirectional reference to a record in another table \u2014 plus rollups<\/strong> that aggregate across those links, and per-person views<\/strong> over one dataset.<\/p>\n Plenty of tools have grids and typed columns. Fewer have genuinely good relational linking with rollups. That is the capability to test during any trial, not the interface.<\/p>\n Open source, self-hostable, with a hosted option. The closest philosophical match \u2014 grid-first, linked records, views, an API \u2014 without the record ceilings when you host it yourself.<\/p>\n Choose it if:<\/strong> you want Airtable’s model without the limits or the vendor. Give up:<\/strong> ecosystem maturity, and some polish. Self-hosting means you own backups and updates.<\/p>\n Open source, and structurally different in a useful way: it puts a spreadsheet interface on top of a real database<\/em> \u2014 Postgres or MySQL you already have or can create.<\/p>\n That matters because your data stays in a standard database. There is no proprietary format to escape from later, and developers can query it directly.<\/p>\n Choose it if:<\/strong> you want no lock-in and have or can run a database. Give up:<\/strong> ease \u2014 this expects more technical comfort.<\/p>\n Postgres-backed, open source, aiming squarely at Airtable’s experience with better scale characteristics.<\/p>\n Choose it if:<\/strong> you want the Airtable feel on a real database. Give up:<\/strong> maturity; it is newer than the others here.<\/p>\n European, with self-hosting available and an emphasis on data residency \u2014 relevant if GDPR obligations shape where your data can sit.<\/p>\n If a lot of what you kept in Airtable was really notes with structure attached, Notion is the better home. Its databases support relations and rollups, and its writing experience is far ahead.<\/p>\n Choose it if:<\/strong> your content is text-heavy. Give up:<\/strong> database rigour \u2014 Notion’s tables are slower with large datasets and its field types are fewer.<\/p>\n Typed columns, strong views, automations, and a visual model non-technical teams adopt quickly. Genuinely capable as a CRM, tracker or content calendar.<\/p>\n Choose it if:<\/strong> you want operational tracking with better automation. Give up:<\/strong> relational depth \u2014 its cross-board connections are weaker than Airtable’s linked records.<\/p>\n Worth naming honestly. If you were not using linked records, you did not need Airtable, and a spreadsheet is free, faster and universally understood.<\/p>\n Choose it if:<\/strong> your base is really one flat table. Give up:<\/strong> relational integrity, views per person, and forms.<\/p>\n Closer to Airtable-plus-project-management, with more built-in process tooling.<\/p>\n If you hit record limits because you are logging events, you have outgrown no-code databases generally. Supabase gives you Postgres with a usable interface, an auto-generated API and authentication.<\/p>\n Choose it if:<\/strong> your volumes are genuinely large or you are building a product. Give up:<\/strong> the no-code promise \u2014 this needs someone technical.<\/p>\n Internal tool builders that sit on top of a database you already have.
